Why Ontario Homeowners Are Ditching the Gym Membership

Ontario gym memberships cost more than most people realize. A mid-range gym in Toronto runs $60 to $85 a month before HST. Add the 13% HST, a join fee, and an annual maintenance fee, and a'$55 per month' membership is realistically costing $75 to $90 a month. For twopeople in the household, that is $1,800 to $2,200 a year, every year, with nothing to show for it at the end.

Then there is the time. A1 5-minute commute each way, three times a week, adds up to more than 75 hours a year in the car. Waiting for a squat rack during peak hours. Crowded change rooms. Equipment that is always occupied when you actually want it.

A backyard gym solves every one of those problems. The space is yours. The equipment is always available. You train on your schedule, not the gym's opening hours. And the structure itself adds real value to your property in a way that a gym membership never will.

What a BES Backyard Gym Actually Looks Like

We have been building backyard gyms for Ontario home owners for over five years. In that time, we have learnedthat no two gym builds are the same. The requests vary widely, and we have built spaces to suit all of them.

Reinforced Subfloors for Heavy Equipment

A standard shed floor is not builtto handle a 300-pound barbell drop or the repeated impact of heavy deadlifts. We can upgrade the subfloor structure to handle the load properly, so yourplatform, rack, and weights are supported the way they need to be.

Higher Ceilings for Full Range of Motion

Standard wall height is not always enough for overhead pressing, muscle-ups, or a pull-up bar with room to spare. We build taller wall heights for clients who need the vertical clearance, so your training is never constrained by the structure.

Insulation for Year-Round Use

An uninsulated space in Ontario is a seasonal space. That means it is unusable in January and a sauna in July. All BES structures are insulation-ready from the start, with proper framing designed to accept insulation correctly. Add a ductless mini-split or awall-mounted heater and your gym works comfortably year-round.

Sound Management

If you want to play music loud, drop weights, or use a punching bag without worrying about your neighbours, we can add soundproofing to the build. It is a popular addition for serious training spaces and makes the difference between a functional gym and a genuinely enjoyable one.

Natural Light and Ventilation

A dark, airless space is not motivating. We add windows and proper ventilation options to keep the space bright and fresh during training. Window placement, size, and are all configurable as part of the design process.

Aesthetic Finishes

Your gym does not have to look like a utility shed. Our steel cladding comes in over 35 colours. Pair it with cedar or pine accents for a space that looks as good from the backyard as it feels to train in. Premium finishes are available on every model.

What a BES Backyard Gym Actually Looks Like

In Ontario, structures up to 160 square feet (roughly 15 square metres) do not require a building permit in most municipalities. That covers a lot of practical gym configurations. A 16 x 10space at 160 square feet accommodates a full rack, a bench, a cardio machine, and storage with room to move. A 20 x 8 is the same footprint with a different shape. A 12 x 12 works well for dedicated mat or yoga spaces.

If you want to go larger, we handle that too. We provide engineered drawings and guide you through the permit process from start to finish. Many clients start with a permit-exempt size and find it is more than enough. Others know from the beginning they want a larger dedicated fitness space, and we build it properly with full documentation.

Worth noting: even permit-exempt structures must follow local zoning bylaws, including setback distances from property lines. Municipality rules vary, so if you are in a specific city or township, it is worth checking your local requirements. We can point you in the right direction.

Popular Backyard Gym Configurations

Here are the gym configurations our Ontario clients choose most often:

  • 16 x 10 (160 sqft, no permit required in most municipalities): the most popular gym size. Fits a fullpower rack, barbell and plates, bench, and a mat area comfortably.
  • 20 x 8 (160 sqft, same footprint, different shape): suits clients who want a longer narrower layout, ideal for a rowing machine or ski erg alongside a lifting station.
  • 12 x 12 (144 sqft, no permit required): works well for yoga studios, martial arts, or any training style that prioritises open floor space over equipment density.
  • 20 x 10 or larger (permit required): for clients who want a full multi-zone gym, dedicated cardio area, or space to train with a partner. We provide engineered drawings and support the permit application.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a permit to build a backyard gym shed in Ontario?

In most Ontario municipalities, structures under 160 square feet do not require a building permit. That means a16 x 10 or 20 x 8 gym can typically be built without going through the permit process. For larger builds, we provide engineered drawings and support theapplication. Note that even permit-exempt structures must meet local zoning setback requirements.

How much does a backyard gym shed cost in Ontario?

Pricing depends on size, features, and finish level. A permit-exempt 16 x 10 gym with standard finishes is a solid entry point. Add insulation, a reinforced subfloor, higher walls, or premium cladding and the price increases accordingly. We provide a detailed quote aftera design conversation so you know exactly what you are getting before committing. Contact us to start the process.

Can a backyard gym shed be used in winter?

Yes, with proper insulation and aheating source. All BES structures are insulation-ready from the start. Add aductless mini-split heat pump and the space stays comfortable year-round regardless of Ontario winters. An uninsulated structure is a seasonal space. If year-round use is your goal, insulation is the most important upgrade.

How long does it take to install a backyard gym shed?

Most builds are completed in asingle day by our installation crew. The structure is pre-fabricated at our Port Stanley shop and arrives as panels ready to assemble. Lead time from design sign-off to installation depends on build complexity and our current schedule. We give you a clear timeline upfront.

What size backyard gym shed do I need?

For most homeowners, a 16 x 10 (160 square feet) is the most practical starting point. It fits a power rack, barbell, bench, and a mat area without feeling cramped. If you want a dedicated cardio zone alongside a lifting area, or you plan to train with a partner regularly, a larger footprint is worth considering. We help you work through this during the design process.

Can you add soundproofing to a backyard gym shed?

Yes. Soundproofing is a common addition for clients who want to train loudly without affecting their neighbours. We incorporate it into the build at the design stage rather than retrofitting it afterward, which gives a better result. If sound management is important to your setup, mention it early in the design conversation.
