Our Backyard Gyms are Designed to Suit any type of Exercise
In 2024 the gyms are getting more crowded than ever and with free-time at an all time low sometimes circling the gym, patiently waiting for that squat-rack or bench to open up can seem like torture. Backyard Escape Studios has been designing and building backyard gyms for our clients all over Ontario for over 5 years now. Although offices are the most common use-case for our studios, gyms are a close second. We'll often get specialized requests for gyms like reinforced subfloors, higher ceilings to accommodate muscle-ups, or added sound-proofing so you can blare your music and slam your weights without scaring your neighbours.
The experience we've gained in helping bring these gyms to life for our customers doesn't just mean we have the manufacturing aspect perfected. As of 2023 you can now build up to 160 sqft in your backyard without the need for a permit. Below are a couple configurations of how common workout equipment could be placed in a 16x10 space but don't feel beholden to that footprint. If your yard would more comfortably fit a 20 x 8 or a 12 x 12 those both still comfortably fit within the no-permit limit. Looking for something a little bigger? No problem at all. We can provide engineered drawing and help you through the permit process to help you create the gym of your dreams!

If you’d like to add insulation, windows, or doors to a standard shipping container you’ll find yourself having to add in a wood frame and cut out large sections of steel. Building from scratch means no wasted time and materials adapting an existing product to your needs.
Much more green! While “upcycling” an old shipping container may seem green, the truth is these units are highly recyclable already. A standard 20’ shipping container weighs almost 5000lbs. And for good reason, they’re expertly designed to carry massive tonnage and stay sturdy for decades. A similarly sized studio from us uses less than 10% of that weight in steel for cladding.
