Backyard Escape Studios installs custom sheds, studios, pool sheds, and cabanas across Richmond Hill. We have built in neighbourhoods throughout the city, from the established homes in Mill Pond and South Richvale through Bayview Hill and Oak Ridges to the newer subdivisions in Jefferson and Westbrook. Richmond Hill lots tend to be larger than central GTA lots, which opens up a wider range of design options including our larger studio and pool shed builds. Most installs are completed in a single day.

Richmond Hill homeowners tend to invest in their properties thoughtfully. The lots are generous, the landscaping is established, and the homes set a clear design direction. A backyard structure has to fit that picture, not look like it was added as an afterthought.
That is the kind of work we do. Every Richmond Hill build starts with a design conversation about what the structure needs to do, how it should look against your existing home, and how it will be used day to day.
Practical reasons Richmond Hill homeowners work with us:
- Less than 2.5 hours from our shop, well within our regular GTA delivery zone
- Single-day installs minimize disruption to your property and routine
- We are familiar with Richmond Hill's stricter accessory building rules (the city applies a 108 sq ft permit threshold rather than the 160 sq ft used in most other Ontario municipalities) and can design within those limits from day one
- We handle the permit process and engineered drawings for larger builds
- Post-install service is straightforward because we handle our own builds end to end
Whether you need a sleek modern storage shed in Mill Pond or a fully-finished home office studio in Bayview Hill, the process is the same: structure-first thinking, premium materials, and a finished product that works for decades.

Permits in Richmond Hill
Quick Permit Notes
Richmond Hill applies a stricter permit threshold than most Ontario municipalities. The City requires a building permit for sheds and accessory structures over 108 sq ft (10 m²), which is lower than the 160 sq ft threshold used elsewhere across the province.
When a permit is required in Richmond Hill:
- Accessory structures 108 sq ft (10 m²) or larger
- Structures containing plumbing
- Structures attached to another building
- Structures used for purposes other than incidental residential use
When a permit is typically NOT required:
- Single-storey detached accessory structures under 108 sq ft (10 m²)
- Storage sheds in rear or interior side yards meeting setback requirements
Other key Richmond Hill rules:
- Minimum setback from side and rear lot lines: 0.61 m (about 2 feet)
- Reduced setback of 0.5 m permitted if no windows or doors face the property line
- Maximum height: 3.0 m (about 10 feet) measured from grade
- Accessory structures must be located in rear or interior side yards, not front yards
We design most of our standard sheds at or below 108 sq ft to maximize the permit-free zone. For larger builds, we handle the engineered drawings and permit application process.
Always confirm specific zoning requirements for your address with the City of Richmond Hill before starting.
