Permits in Burlington, Ontario

Quick Permit Notes

In Burlington, accessory structures under 15 m2 (approximately 160 sq ft) that are single-storey, plumbing-free, and not attached to any other structure typically do not require a building permit. This applies to sheds, cabanas, and similar structures used for purposes ancillary to a residential dwelling.

Even when no permit is required, Burlington's Zoning By-law still applies. Key rules for accessory buildings in residential zones typically include:

Permitted in rear yards only, not in front or side yards
Minimum setback of 1.2 m from the rear lot line
Minimum setback of 1.2 m from the side lot line
Minimum setback of 7.5 m from a street side yard
Maximum floor area of 50 m2
Maximum height of 4.6 m (peaked roof) or 3.5 m (flat roof)
One storey maximum

Burlington properties near Conservation Halton land, the Niagara Escarpment, or Lake Ontario may be subject to additional approvals beyond the standard building and zoning process.
