For structures that do require a permit, the following rules generally apply under Oakville's zoning bylaw:

Maximum height: 4 metres for flat or shed-roof structures in most zones
Lot coverage: accessory structures typically cannot push total lot coverage beyond the maximum set for your zone, which varies by property
