Ajax 16x14 Multi-Use Backyard Studio with Wood Stove

A Multi-Use Backyard Studio in Ajax
Fadi came to us with a clear brief: a backyard studio that could do two things well. A productive workspace where he could focus without the distractions of a busy household. And a comfortable retreat where his family could relax and spend time together.
Those two uses are not as different as they might sound. Both require a space that feels separate from the main house. Both benefit from natural light, good airflow in summer, and warmth in winter. The challenge is designing a structure that transitions between focused work mode and relaxed family mode without feeling awkward in either.
The 16x14 footprint gives enough square footage to make both uses genuinely comfortable. At 224 sqft, this is not a compact studio. It is a serious space.
The Design Process
From the initial consultation, we focused on two things: natural light and flow. A 4-panel sliding door was the centrepiece of the design. It opens the entire front wall to the backyard in summer, creating a seamless transition between interior and exterior space. For a family leisure use, that connection to the yard is important. For a home office, the option to close it fully and work in a quiet, insulated environment is equally important.
The material combination was chosen to complement the natural surroundings behind Fadi's property. Muskoka Brown stain on the pine tongue and groove siding brings warmth and a natural tone. Charcoal corrugated steel on the sides and roof provides a clean, modern contrast that holds up with zero maintenance. The Muskoka Brown outriggers and trim tie the two materials together.
The Build
Three days on site. Two trailers loaded with prefabricated wall panels, rafters, siding, and steel.
Day 1: Structure assembled and made watertight. The modular prefabrication approach means the structural work happens fast and the site is never left exposed overnight.
Day 2: All exterior siding installed. Final roofing ply completed with accommodation for the future wood stove vent. The wood stove was not part of our scope but the structure was prepped for it.
Day 3: Finishing touches. Trim around windows and door. Touch-up stain. Silicone to ensure the build was completely watertight. Full walkthrough with Fadi to confirm he was satisfied before we left.
At that point the structure was complete from our end. Electrical and interior finishing were contracted separately by Fadi.
The Result
A 224 sqft backyard studio that works as hard as Fadi needs it to and relaxes as easily as his family wants it to. The Muskoka Brown pine and charcoal steel combination sits comfortably against the natural backdrop of his Ajax property. The 4-panel sliding door is the feature that makes the space — in summer it opens the studio to the yard, in winter it closes everything out.
We are proud of the craftsmanship here. This is a structure that will stand in that yard for decades.
