9x6 Sauna Shed in Barrie, Ontario

A Dedicated Sauna Space, Built to Last in a Barrie Backyard
Not every backyard shed is about storage. This one in Barrie was built around a single, clear purpose: a dedicated outdoor sauna space that could hold up through a Simcoe County winter and still look sharp doing it. The homeowner already had a well-composed outdoor living area, with a tiki shelter, a stone fireplace, and a mature tree line closing in the back of the property. What they needed was a structure that belonged in that setting, not a box that looked like it was dropped there by accident.
Backyard Escape Studios built this 9x6 Advanced Shed on an existing concrete pad, keeping the footprint compact and the build tight. Upgrading to 2x6 framing on 24-inch centres was the right call for a sauna application: the thicker wall cavity gives more room for insulation, which directly affects how well the space holds heat. This was a functional decision as much as a structural one.
Cedar Up Front, Steel on the Sides: A Finish Combination That Works Hard in Barrie's Climate
The front wall is tight knot cedar, run vertically and finished with a clear coat. In full daylight, that cedar reads as a warm, rich amber, the kind of tone that deepens and grows more interesting as it weathers over time. Set against the grey-green of the surrounding trees and the stone of the outdoor fireplace nearby, it anchors the whole structure visually without competing with anything around it.
The sides and back are clad in 7/8-inch corrugated steel in Galvalume: a bright, cool silver that shifts in tone depending on the light. On a clear day it catches the sky and almost disappears into it. On overcast days it reads as a clean, matte grey. Paired with the warmth of the cedar front, the contrast is deliberate and it works. The two materials make each other more distinct without either one overpowering the other.
The roofline runs at a low five-degree slope with 12-inch overhangs on all four sides, finished in matching Galvalume flashing. That overhang protects the cedar and the door threshold from direct rain contact, which matters in Barrie where freeze-thaw cycles do real damage to exposed wood over time.
A Full-Lite Glass Door on a Sauna Shed: The Detail That Changes the Whole Feel
The door is a full-lite glass panel in a grey frame, and it does something unexpected for a structure this size. Glass on a 9x6 sauna shed lets light move through the space and keeps it from feeling like a box. When the door is closed, you can see into the structure from the yard, which gives the whole build more presence. When it is open, the transition from the outdoor living area into the sauna feels deliberate rather than cramped.
On a practical level, a full-lite door also lets the homeowner monitor temperature and conditions inside without opening it. For a sauna application, that small detail adds up over time. The grey frame ties back to the Galvalume siding on the sides, so the door reads as part of the exterior finish rather than a separate element that was added later.
The horizontal transom window above the door on the front wall completes the look. It sits high enough to bring in ambient light without compromising privacy or heat retention, which is exactly what a sauna space needs.
Custom Sauna Sheds in Barrie and Across Simcoe County
Barrie homeowners are increasingly looking for ways to extend their outdoor seasons, and a purpose-built sauna shed is one of the most direct ways to do it. The city's proximity to Georgian Bay and its cold winters make an outdoor sauna a genuinely practical addition, not just a luxury one. Whether the property backs onto a ravine in Ardagh, sits in a newer development in Holly or Painswick, or occupies a larger lot in Innisfil or Essa Township, a compact sauna shed can be built to fit almost any site.
Backyard Escape Studios builds custom sauna sheds, backyard sheds, and outdoor studio structures across Simcoe County and the surrounding region. Communities including Angus, Cookstown, Collingwood, Wasaga Beach, Midland, and Orillia are all within our regular service area. If you are searching for a custom sauna shed builder near Barrie, an outdoor sauna cabin in Simcoe County, or a purpose-built backyard structure anywhere in central Ontario, we would be glad to talk through your project.
