12x9 Backyard Gym in Etobicoke, Ontario

A Power Rack Needed a Home, So We Built One in Etobicoke
Not every gym belongs inside the house. When the squat rack, bumper plates, and sled start crowding the basement or eating into the garage, the backyard becomes the obvious answer. That was the situation for the homeowner in Etobicoke: a serious lifting setup with no good place to put it, and a yard that could absorb a small footprint without losing usable space.
The build is a 12x9 Essential Shed reworked into a dedicated backyard gym. Twelve feet of width gives the rack room to breathe, nine feet of depth keeps the structure tight against the property line, and the taller front wall opens up the ceiling so pull-ups and overhead pressing actually work. This is not storage with a treadmill shoved in the corner. It is a purpose-built training space dropped into an Etobicoke yard.
Pine T+G and Jet Black Steel: The Material Mix That Carries This Build
The front and side walls run in 1x6 horizontal premium tight-knot pine, tongue and groove, stained in Muskoka Brown. In afternoon light the boards read like warm honey, with the knots breaking up the grain so the wall has texture instead of looking flat. The horizontal coursing pulls the eye along the length of the shed and makes the 12 foot face feel longer and lower than it is.
The back wall and one side wall flip to jet black corrugated 7/8 inch steel siding. The contrast does real work here. Where the pine softens and warms, the black corrugation sharpens and grounds the structure. Standing in the yard, the pine face reads as the welcoming side, the side you approach. The black flanks read as the working side, the side that gets weather and time without showing it. The metal flashing, cornering, and roof cap are all matched in jet black, so the shed has a clean continuous edge wrapping the whole envelope.
French Doors with Frosted Glass: Why That Choice Matters for a Gym
The 72x80 frosted glass French doors are the detail that makes this build function as a gym instead of a generic shed. Two doors swinging out means the homeowner can move equipment in and out without angling a rack through a single opening. The frosted glass pulls daylight into the space without putting the workout on display for neighbours, and the black painted exterior keeps the doors visually tied to the corrugated steel. Black wall sconces flank the doors on either side, which means evening sessions are not a problem in Etobicoke's shorter winter days.
The extra ceiling height was a deliberate call. Standard Essential Sheds run shorter at the front wall, but the 11 foot front roof on this build gives full clearance for overhead movements and pull-up work on the rack. The 1 inch rigid foam exterior insulation and 2x6 site walls were added so the structure holds temperature better through Toronto's swing seasons, which matters when the goal is using the space year round.
Backyard Gyms Across Etobicoke and the Greater Toronto Area
Etobicoke is one of the densest neighbourhoods in the city for homeowners who want backyard structures that do more than hold a lawnmower. Lots are deep, mature trees give privacy, and the housing stock from Sunnylea and The Kingsway through Mimico, New Toronto, and Long Branch tends to support compact custom builds without the neighbour line problems you see further downtown. A backyard gym in Etobicoke is the move for the homeowner who lifts seriously, wants the equipment out of the main house, and does not want to lose half the garage.
Backyard Escape Studios builds across Etobicoke and the wider Toronto market, including Islington-City Centre West, Stonegate-Queensway, Alderwood, and Markland Wood. We also serve Mississauga, Oakville, Burlington, Toronto's west end neighbourhoods like Roncesvalles and High Park, and north through Vaughan and Woodbridge. If a backyard gym, studio, or custom shed is on the list for your Etobicoke property, the build process is the same one that produced this one: site review, materials chosen for the yard, and a one day install that leaves the lawn intact.
