8x8 Garden Shed in Etobicoke, Ontario

A Side-Yard Garden Shed That Earned Its Spot in Etobicoke
Not every backyard has room to hide a shed. This Etobicoke property runs a narrow strip between a brick two-storey and the fence line, with mature plantings on both sides and a Japanese maple overhead. A standard box from a big-box store would have felt like clutter in a yard this established.
The homeowner wanted real storage with a finish that would hold its own next to the brick, the cedar fence, and the planted beds. The answer was an 8x8 Garden Shed, built as an Essential Shed with mixed cladding, a frosted glass door, and a side window. The compact footprint fits the side-yard pad. The materials do the rest.
Iron Ore Steel Paired With Cedar That Reads Warm Against the Brick
The exterior runs in two halves. Corrugated 7/8 inch steel in Iron Ore wraps the back wall, the left wall, and roughly half of both the front and right walls. Iron Ore is a deep charcoal grey with a slight cool cast. In overcast Etobicoke light it reads almost black against the foliage. In direct sun it softens to a flat graphite that picks up the ridges of the corrugation.
The remaining halves of the front and right walls are clad in 1x6 Eastern White Cedar, run horizontally and left under a clear coat. The cedar holds onto its natural honey tone, which warms the whole structure where it meets the door. Where the two materials meet, the dark steel frames the cedar like an inset panel.
The trim, door frame, and window surround all carry a custom paint matched to the Iron Ore steel. The exposed rafter tails and soffits use the same colour, so the eye reads the dark cladding as a continuous frame around the cedar insert. Against the warm brick of the house, the shed pulls a quieter, more modern note into the yard.
A Frosted Glass Door That Brings Daylight Into Storage
Most sheds are dark inside. A frosted glass insert door changes that. We installed a 36x80 inswing door with a full-height frosted glass panel on the front wall, set into the cedar half so the cedar frames it on the hinge side. A matching 24x36 frosted Lexan fixed window sits on the right wall.
The frosted glass gives the homeowner soft, even daylight inside the shed without exposing what is stored in there. For a Garden Shed used daily through the Etobicoke growing season, that small move changes how the building actually gets used. From the outside, neither the door nor the window reveals the contents. From the inside, you can find what you need without flipping on a bulb.
The inswing direction was a site decision. The shed sits tight to a planted bed on the latch side, so an outswing door would have crashed into hostas every time it opened. Inswing keeps the garden intact and the path clear.
Custom Garden Sheds Built and Installed Across Etobicoke and the Wider GTA
Etobicoke homeowners deal with the same conditions we worked around on this project: tight side-yards, mature trees, brick-clad houses, and landscaping that has been in the ground for years. A Garden Shed has to earn its place visually and physically, especially in neighbourhoods like The Kingsway, Sunnylea, Mimico, Alderwood, Long Branch, Markland Wood, and Thorncrest Village, where homes have established character and owners who notice the details.
Backyard Escape Studios designs, builds, and installs Essential Sheds, Cube Sheds, and Backyard Studios for clients across the western half of the City of Toronto, including Etobicoke, Old Mill, Humber Bay, Royal York, and Islington. We also serve the broader Greater Toronto Area: Mississauga, Oakville, Burlington, Brampton, Vaughan and Woodbridge, Toronto proper, Markham, and Richmond Hill.
If your Etobicoke property has a difficult side-yard, a narrow pad, or a backyard that needs storage without losing its character, we can design and install a shed that fits the space and the style.
