When a Rectangle Won't Fit: A Modern Shed for a Tight Etobicoke Backyard

Older Etobicoke neighbourhoods weren't laid out with sheds in mind. This project started with exactly that problem. The client needed real storage on a tight Etobicoke lot without losing the working part of the backyard. The answer was a custom Modern Shed built on a Suburban Shed platform but reworked into an 8x8 diamond footprint. Five walls instead of four, with the door set on the diagonal corner face so it opens into the yard rather than parallel to a property line.

Vertical Cedar and Jet Black Steel: How This Etobicoke Modern Shed Reads in the Yard

The front and door-facing walls are wrapped in vertical cedar tongue-and-groove. In direct afternoon sun the cedar reads a warm honey amber, and by early evening it drops to a softer caramel. Board-to-board variation and live knot detail give the front face real depth, so it holds visual interest up close rather than reading flat the way a painted panel would.

The back wall, side wall, and lower half of the door face are wrapped in 26-gauge Jet Black corrugated steel with a textured finish. The texture kills the glare a smooth black panel would throw, so instead of a shiny slab it reads matte and quiet. That matte black settles into the shadow of the wood fence behind it and lets the cedar step forward as the focal point of the whole structure.

Trim, door frame, window surrounds, and roof edge are all matched in black. Two small punched windows sit on either side of the door in black frames, reading as sharp graphic notches against the cedar. The low-slope roof carries a dark membrane finish with extended overhangs that shadow the door face and keep rain off the frosted glass.

The Diamond Footprint Is the Whole Story on This Etobicoke Build

The standout on this Modern Shed isn't a material choice, it's the geometry. A standard 8x8 shed dropped into a backyard corner pushes into the yard in two directions and leaves a dead triangle behind it against the fence. The diamond rewrites that math. Two walls sit flush along the fence line, two more angle in at forty-five degrees, and the fifth wall carries the door.

That does two useful things. The door opens into the middle of the yard rather than parallel to a property line, so the homeowner isn't walking sideways to load and unload. And the pentagon recovers the wasted corner space, giving nearly the same usable interior on a smaller visual footprint.

The frosted glass outswing door adds one more thing a square shed can't. Even without extra windows, daylight carries into the interior through the glass, so the shed reads bright and workable rather than closed off. On a small Etobicoke lot, that difference matters.
