12x8 Garden Shed in Guelph, Ontario

Two Materials, One Shed That Means Business in Guelph
Most homeowners in Guelph come to us with the same problem: they need real storage, and they don't want something that looks like it belongs on a farm. Scott came to us with a backyard that needed to work harder, and a standard pre-fab box wasn't going to cut it. He wanted something that felt intentional, that held its own against the house, and that would still look sharp a decade from now.
The result is a 12x8 Advanced Shed that earns its place in the yard. Two materials, a disciplined palette, and a roof that extends well past the walls. Nothing about this build is accidental.
Jet Black Steel and Kendall Charcoal Pine: A Guelph Backyard Built in Two Tones
The corrugated steel on the right, left, and back walls is Jet Black, and it reads exactly the way that name suggests. In flat light it's a true near-black, dense and matte. In direct Ontario summer sun it picks up a faint depth, somewhere between gunmetal and slate, with the ribbed profile casting thin parallel shadows across the surface. It makes the shed look heavier than its footprint, in the best possible way.
The front wall is a different material entirely: 1x11 premium tight-knot pine shiplap, stained Kendall Charcoal. Where the steel is cool and industrial, the pine is warmer, the grain still visible under the stain, the colour sitting just a shade lighter than the corrugated panels beside it. Together they don't clash. They layer. The tonal difference between the two is subtle enough to read as a single palette and distinct enough to give the front face its own character.
The steel trim, flashing, and fascia are all Jet Black, tying the two materials together at every edge and corner. Nothing is left raw or unfinished.
The Sliding Barn Doors and the Roof That Makes the Whole Thing Work
The double sliding barn doors open to a full 60 inches, painted Black Beauty, a shade that sits just off true black with a slight warmth that keeps the doors from disappearing into the steel behind them. The galvanized hardware runs along a track mounted beneath the transom window band, with three frosted Lexan windows sitting above the opening. Those windows do two things: they keep the interior from feeling like a sealed box, and they break up the front elevation so the doors don't dominate the whole face.
The roof is the detail that ties the structure together. A low mono-pitch with a 20-inch overhang on the front and both sides, finished with a black cap sheet and framed by exposed rafters stained to match the front shiplap. The overhang isn't decorative. It protects the top of the doors and the shiplap from direct weather exposure, which matters for a wood-fronted shed through a Guelph winter. It also gives the roofline a horizontal weight that makes the shed look lower and more grounded, even though the front wall height runs close to nine feet.
Custom Garden Shed Builder Serving Guelph and Wellington County
Guelph is a city that takes its neighbourhoods seriously, and the yards in areas like Kortright Hills, Clairfields, and Westminster Woods reflect that. Homeowners here want structures that fit the property, not just fill a corner of it. This kind of two-tone Advanced Shed works particularly well in newer subdivisions where the home exterior already has a mix of materials, and the shed becomes an extension of that design language rather than an afterthought.
Backyard Escape Studios builds and installs custom garden sheds and backyard structures across Guelph and the surrounding Wellington County area. We also serve Cambridge, Kitchener, Waterloo, and Fergus, as well as communities throughout the broader region including Elora, Rockwood, and Acton.
