8x7 Garden Shed in Guelph, Ontario

When the Backyard Calls for Something That Actually Looks Good
Most homeowners in Guelph don't want a shed that looks like an afterthought. They want something that earns its place in the yard, something that looks deliberate next to the house rather than dropped there and forgotten. That was the situation here: a straightforward need for backyard storage, but no interest in the usual box-with-a-door solution. The goal was an Advanced Shed that could hold its own visually, built to the same standard as the home it sits beside.
The result is an 8x7 Advanced Shed in Guelph that uses two materials, two tones, and one very considered door to pull the whole thing together. It is compact without feeling small, and finished well enough that it reads more like a design decision than a utility structure.
Charcoal Steel and Warm Pine: Two Materials That Know What They Are Doing
The right, left, and back walls are clad in 7/8-inch corrugated steel siding in Charcoal Grey. In flat light, that colour reads as a deep, cool neutral, somewhere between slate and gunmetal. In direct sun, it picks up a slight warmth at the ridges of the corrugation and sits solidly against the green of the lawn. It does not try to blend in. It anchors the shed visually, giving it weight and presence even at a compact footprint.
The front wall is a different conversation. Horizontal 1x6 tight-knot pine tongue-and-groove boards, stained with Sikkens Cetol in Mahogany, run the full width of the facade. That stain pulls the natural grain of the pine into focus, pushing it toward a warm amber-red that reads rich without being loud. Set against the cool charcoal of the steel walls, the contrast is immediate and intentional: two materials that know exactly what they are doing next to each other. The exposed rafters under the roof overhang carry the same mahogany stain, tying the underside of the roof back to the front wall and giving the shed a sense of finish that shows up even from a distance.
A Sliding Barn Door That Earns Its Keep on a Tight Footprint
On an 8x7 shed, door choice matters more than it does on a larger structure. A traditional swing door would eat into usable space every time it opens, forcing whoever is using the shed to step back before stepping in. The sliding barn door solves that problem entirely: it moves along a steel track mounted to the front wall, never swinging into the interior or into the yard. The practical benefit is real, especially on a narrower footprint.
But the door does more than solve a clearance problem. It is painted charcoal to match the steel siding on the side walls, which frames the warm pine front on both sides and holds the composition together. Three frosted Lexan-glass panels run vertically down its face, and two matching 36x14-inch transom windows sit above the door along the front wall. The frosted glass brings in diffused light without creating a direct view into the storage interior, which keeps things looking clean from outside. The combination of the glass door, the transom windows, and the exposed overhang soffit gives this shed a front elevation that reads as resolved, not assembled.
Custom Backyard Sheds Built Across Guelph and the Surrounding Region
