16x10 Bike Shed in Hamilton, Ontario

When a University Needs Storage That Looks Like It Belongs There
Not every shed goes in a backyard. This one went along the side of a building at McMaster University in Hamilton, installed on an existing concrete pad against a pale brick facade. The challenge was the same one any institutional site presents: the structure needed to hold up in a high-traffic environment, look intentional, and not read like an afterthought dropped against the wall.
The solution was a 16x10 Essential Shed built for serious bike storage, with a finish that holds its own next to the surrounding architecture. Backyard Escape Studios delivered it in a day.
Charcoal Steel That Reads Serious Against a Brick Wall in Hamilton
The exterior is almost entirely 7/8" corrugated steel in a deep charcoal tone, the kind of colour that sits somewhere between graphite and black depending on the light. In full sun it has a cool, slightly metallic quality. On an overcast Hamilton day it goes flat and dark, which is exactly what this location called for. The colour neither fights the pale brick behind it nor disappears into it.
The front wall introduces a panel of horizontal tight-knot pine T+G flanking the door, finished to match the steel. It breaks up what would otherwise be a uniform corrugated face and adds a layer of materiality without softening the overall industrial tone. The matching corrugated steel roof, with a 12-inch overhang on three sides, ties the whole exterior together and keeps water well away from the door threshold.
A Flush Door That Disappears Into the Wall
The 42x80 standard flush door is finished in the same dark tone as the surrounding steel, and it works precisely because it does not call attention to itself. There is no glass, no decorative panel, no visual interruption. From a distance, the door nearly reads as part of the wall.
That matters here. This shed sits in a public-facing institutional setting where the goal was coherence, not character. The multipoint lock with deadbolt gives the building manager proper security without adding visual bulk. The result is a storage unit that looks like it was designed for the site, not ordered from a catalogue and dropped into place.
