14x10 Garden Shed in London, Ontario

When the Backyard Needs a Structure That Can Actually Be Looked At
Most homeowners in London who are searching for a garden shed are thinking about storage first and looks second. That calculus shifts pretty quickly once you realize the shed is going to sit in your backyard for the next twenty years, visible from the house every single day. That's the situation T. brought to Backyard Escape Studios: a need for real, usable garden storage, but no interest in the kind of box that drags a yard down.
The answer was a 14x10 Essential Shed, installed at a London property in the Birchwood neighbourhood. At this size, the shed handles serious storage while staying proportional to a residential lot. The design split the walls between two materials, which gave the finished structure a visual complexity that a single-material shed simply can't match.
Jet Black Steel and Muskoka Brown Pine: A Pairing That Works Hard
The right side, left side, and back walls are clad in 7/8-inch corrugated steel in Jet Black. In flat light, it reads as a true near-black, almost graphite, with the corrugation casting subtle shadow lines that give the surface texture without pattern. In direct sun, there's just enough warmth in the tone to keep it from feeling cold. It absorbs the yard rather than competing with it.
The front wall and the left side's main run are wrapped in 1x6 horizontal tight-knot pine, stained Muskoka Brown. That stain lands somewhere between amber and tobacco: warm, organic, and honest about what it is. Set against the Jet Black steel on the corners and the overhang soffits, also finished in Black Beauty, the contrast is immediate but not jarring. The black frames the wood the way trim frames a window. Each material makes the other look more deliberate.
The exposed soffits carry the black finish out over the roofline, extending the dark cap across the front edge and tying the whole composition together. A single-slope roof pitches from a 9-foot front wall down to a 7-foot back wall, which keeps the profile lean and modern while moving water off the structure efficiently.
The Split-Wall Design: More Than a Visual Choice
The decision to mix steel and pine across different wall sections wasn't purely aesthetic. The steel panels on the back and sides face the conditions that do the most damage over time: moisture, ground splash, and prolonged shade. Corrugated steel handles all of that without maintenance. The wood panels on the front and the main left wall face south and west, where they get the most direct light and the most visibility from the house. That's where the warmth of the pine matters most to the homeowner's daily experience of the yard.
The result is a shed that puts its most durable material where durability counts and its most visually interesting material where it will actually be seen. Both choices came from the same logic: put the right material in the right place for the right reason. The full-glass frosted outswing door on the front right pulls natural light into the interior while keeping the contents private, and the 36x36 frosted vinyl window on the left wall adds a second light source without compromising the clean run of pine panelling on that wall.
