10x8 Garden Shed in St. Thomas, Ontario

A Clean, Classic Combination That Gets It Right in St. Thomas
Sometimes the goal isn't to reinvent the wheel. It is to take a proven material pairing, build it properly, and let it stand on its own. That was the brief for this 10x8 garden shed in St. Thomas: a structure that would fit a residential backyard without looking like an afterthought, and hold up through Ontario seasons without asking for anything in return.
The Essential Shed was the right call here. It is a straightforward build, but straightforward does not mean simple. Every detail on this St. Thomas project was chosen deliberately, from the steel on three walls to the pine facing front and centre.
Black Steel and Cedar Pine: Two Materials That Know What They Are
The right side, left side, and back wall are clad in 7/8" corrugated steel finished in Classic Black. In flat daylight, it reads as a true, deep black, the kind that absorbs light rather than reflecting it. Against a cedar fence or green grass, that darkness grounds the shed in the yard rather than competing with it. The corrugated profile adds structure and shadow lines that give the steel wall dimension, so it reads as a designed surface, not just a cladding choice.
The front wall is a different story entirely. Horizontal 1x6 premium tight-knot pine tongue and groove runs the full width of the face, stained in cedar. That cedar tone sits somewhere between honey and amber, warm enough to read as wood from across a yard but not orange or artificial. The contrast with the black steel on the sides is exactly what makes this combination work: two materials that are completely honest about what they are, placed side by side so each one makes the other look better.
The soffits and exposed overhangs are painted Black Beauty to match the steel, which ties the roofline into the walls and keeps the whole structure reading as one deliberate thing rather than a collection of separate parts.
Double Sliding Barn Doors: The Right Door for a Working Shed
The door choice on this St. Thomas garden shed is worth talking about. Double sliding barn doors with a 60-inch rough opening run on overhead track hardware, which means no swing arc to plan around and no clearance issue when your arms are full. For a backyard storage shed, that opening width is genuinely useful: lawnmowers, bikes, seasonal equipment, all of it moves in and out without any angles or awkward manoeuvring.
Each door panel has three frosted Lexan glass windows, arranged in two rows. The frosted glass brings in diffused light without putting the interior on display. It also breaks up what would otherwise be a flat black door surface, adding detail that reads as considered rather than decorative. Finished in Black Beauty to match the soffits and trim, the doors disappear into the front face of the shed until you need them.
