12x8 Advanced Garden Shed in Toronto, Ontario

A Cedar and Steel Shed That Earns Its Place in a Toronto Backyard
Not every Toronto backyard gives you much to work with. Tight lots, mature trees, fences on all sides — the space is what it is, and whatever goes into it has to carry its weight visually. This homeowner near Runnymede and Annette wanted a 12x8 Advanced Shed that looked like it belonged there, not like something dropped in from a big-box store. The brief was clear: clean lines, quality materials, and a design that could stand next to a well-kept urban yard without looking out of place.
Backyard Escape Studios built to that standard. The result is a shed that uses two very different materials in conversation with each other, letting each one do what it does best.
Cedar Up Front, Steel on the Sides: Why the Contrast Works
The front wall is clad in 1x6 horizontal tight-knot Western Red Cedar, finished in clear coat. In direct light, the cedar reads warm and honey-toned, with the grain and natural knots giving the surface real depth. On an overcast Toronto day, it softens to a quieter amber — still rich, still unmistakably wood. The clear coat keeps it honest: no colour added, nothing hidden, just the material as it actually is.
The right, left, and back walls are corrugated 7/8" steel siding in Charcoal. Where the cedar is warm, the steel is cool and flat. The Charcoal sits in that range between dark grey and near-black, reading almost graphite in shade and lifting slightly in direct sun. Set against the cedar front, the contrast reads as deliberate and controlled — not a mismatch, but a pairing that gives the whole shed a more considered look than either material could achieve alone. Steel trim and flashing in the same Charcoal tone wrap the corners and roofline cleanly.
The roof is a SAM self-adhering membrane with a black cap sheet finish, keeping the profile low and the palette tight. Exposed rafters and soffits finished in clear coat carry the cedar warmth overhead, connecting the front wall to the roofline without interruption.
A Sliding Barn Door That Works as Hard as It Looks
The 42" sliding barn door is the detail that ties the whole front elevation together. Finished in Kendall Charcoal to match the steel siding, it includes three frosted lexan glass panels stacked vertically — enough light transmission to make the interior usable without sacrificing privacy. The sliding hardware keeps the footprint in front of the shed clear, which matters on a Toronto lot where every square foot of yard counts. You don't lose swing clearance, you don't block the path, and the door tracks smoothly on the rail above.
Three 11x32" transom windows run across the top of the front wall, positioned just below the roofline. They pull natural light into the upper portion of the shed without opening the walls. Combined with the frosted glass in the door, the interior gets real working light — not just a suggestion of it.
