8x12 Modern Shed in Etobicoke, Ontario

A Modern Shed That Solves the Etobicoke Side-Yard Puzzle
Not every backyard in Etobicoke has room to spare. This homeowner's property runs narrow along one side, boxed in by fencing on both sides with barely enough clearance to work with. Most sheds would either crowd the space or force a compromise on size.
The solution was an 8x12 Cube Shed, built as a modern shed with a clean, squared-off profile that tucks into the side yard without eating up the usable backyard behind it. In Etobicoke, where lot widths can be tight and every foot of yard counts, that kind of fit matters as much as the finish.
The goal for this Etobicoke build was straightforward: a fully framed, code-built structure that reads as an intentional design feature rather than a storage afterthought squeezed between two fences.
Black Beauty Pine Meets Steel on This Etobicoke Build
The front face is finished in 1x6 shiplap pine, stained in Black Beauty. In direct sun it reads as a deep charcoal brown, and in shade it drops to a near-black, picking up warmth from the wood grain underneath the stain. Next to the cedar fencing on either side, it reads as distinctly modern rather than rustic.
Running vertically down the corner is a corrugated steel accent panel, also finished in black. The horizontal lines of the pine against the vertical ribs of the steel give the shed a sense of proportion it would not have with siding alone. The rear wall and the side opposite the door switch to corrugated steel throughout, which also cuts down on the maintenance load across the structure.
The roof carries a slight pitch with a clean black membrane edge, keeping the sightline low from the house and from the neighbouring yards on either side. In a tight Etobicoke side yard, a low, quiet roofline is part of what makes the shed disappear into the property rather than dominate it.
A Full-Glass Door That Earns Its Keep in a Narrow Yard
The standout detail on this Etobicoke project is the 36x80 black inswing door with a full-glass frosted insert. In a side yard this narrow, natural light matters more than usual, since the space rarely gets direct sun for long stretches of the day.
The frosted glass lets daylight into the shed without turning it into a window on the neighbour's fence line six feet away. The inswing configuration was chosen specifically for this site, since an outswing door in a passage this tight would have nowhere to open without hitting the fence. It is a small decision that solves a real, practical problem rather than just looking good in a photo.
Black hardware and a standard silver lock keep the entry simple and consistent with the rest of the shed's dark palette, so nothing on the door competes with the siding or the steel accent.
Modern Sheds Built Across Etobicoke and the West End
This Etobicoke project is a good example of what Backyard Escape Studios builds for homeowners working with tighter city lots: a modern shed that fits the site instead of asking the site to accommodate it. It is especially relevant for older Etobicoke neighbourhoods near the Islington, Kingsway, and Mimico areas, where narrow side yards and mature fencing are common.
Backyard Escape Studios installs modern sheds and Cube Sheds throughout Etobicoke and the surrounding west end of Toronto, including Long Branch, New Toronto, and High Park. We also serve homeowners further west into Mississauga and Oakville who are looking for the same clean, low-maintenance approach to backyard storage.
If your Etobicoke property has a side yard, laneway, or tight corner that a standard shed would not fit, this build shows what is possible with the right layout and the right materials.
