11x9 Backyard Studio in Toronto, Ontario

When the Backyard Is Your Only Option for More Space
In Midtown Toronto, you don't get to build out. The lots are tight, the neighbours are close, and anyone who's tried to add square footage to a house in this part of the city knows what that project actually costs. What you can do is build back. And that's exactly what this homeowner on Merton Street did.
The goal was a dedicated backyard studio: a real, finished, insulated space that could be used year-round. Not a shed with a space heater. Something that functions like a room, but lives in the yard. Backyard Escape Studios delivered an 11x9 Advanced Studio that does exactly that, without touching the house.
Cedar and Steel: A Combination That Works Hard in Toronto Backyards
The front wall is 1x6 horizontal tight-knot pine tongue-and-groove, stained in Muskoka Brown. In full sun, that stain reads like warm amber, the kind of colour that makes wood look alive rather than painted. On a grey Toronto morning, it settles into something richer and quieter, closer to dark honey. It's a tone that ages well and holds up through Ontario winters without looking tired.
The left, right, and back walls are finished in 7/8" corrugated steel in Jet Black. That steel reads almost like shadow from a distance, especially against the warm wood of the front. Up close, the corrugation catches light in a way that gives the surface texture and dimension. The two materials don't compete. The wood says warmth, the steel says structure, and together they produce a building that looks like it was considered from every angle.
The roofline adds to that effect. The mono-slope runs from approximately 10 feet at the front down to 9 feet at the back, with a 20-inch overhang on three sides. The soffits are stained to match the pine, so the overhang reads as an extension of the facade rather than a tacked-on detail. The rolled asphalt roof is black, which ties the top of the structure back to the steel walls and keeps the whole composition grounded.
A Full Glass Door That Earns Its Place on the Front Wall
The door is a 36x80 clear full-glass outswing, finished in Black Beauty. On a studio, a full glass door isn't decoration. It does something specific: it connects the inside to the yard visually, so the space doesn't feel cut off from the property. Natural light comes in from two directions, the door on the right and the 6x4 offset window on the left, which combines a fixed pane with a casement section for ventilation.
Both the door and window are framed in black, which ties them back to the steel siding and gives the front wall a precision that raw wood alone wouldn't achieve. The contrast between the warm pine and the black glass frames is sharp and intentional. It's the kind of detail that separates a studio from a shed, and it's visible from the moment you step into the yard.
A Backyard Studio Builder Serving Toronto and the Surrounding Area
This project was installed in the Davisville Village neighbourhood, one of Midtown Toronto's most established residential pockets. It's a part of the city where homeowners invest in their properties and expect contractors to show up and perform. This build was completed to that standard: level, clean, and done right.
Toronto homeowners looking for a custom backyard studio, a dedicated workspace, or a finished outbuilding that adds real value to the property are exactly who this type of build is built for. Backyard Escape Studios works across the City of Toronto, including neighbourhoods like Leaside, Forest Hill, The Annex, Rosedale, Leslieville, Riverdale, and East York. The team also serves the broader Greater Toronto Area, including Etobicoke, North York, Scarborough, and communities throughout York Region, Peel Region, and Halton Region.
