Toronto 22x12 Premium Cedar Studio with Drum Room

A Stunning Cedar Studio in Downtown Toronto
Our customer Matthew lives in downtown Toronto and has a busy corporate job to match his busy surroundings. Being close to work was important for his lifestyle, but finding homes with adequate space for a growing family in downtown Toronto is no easy task.
A backyard studio gave Matthew's family the breathing room they needed and gave him a private space to de-stress and play his drums without affecting the rest of the household. For homeowners in dense Toronto neighbourhoods, where moving to a larger property in a desirable area can mean compromising on commute or location, an insulated backyard studio is often a smarter investment than upsizing. It adds usable square footage right where you already live.
Why Cedar Is the Right Choice for a Toronto Backyard Studio
Matthew spared no expense on his design. He chose 1x6 Clear Cedar siding, which represents the top tier of cedar shed materials. Clear cedar has minimal knots, a consistent grain pattern, and a richer overall appearance than standard cedar siding. It is the choice for homeowners who want their backyard studio to look like a premium architectural addition rather than a generic shed.
What makes cedar specifically well-suited for a backyard studio in Ontario:
- Natural oils in cedar resist decay, insects, and moisture, reducing the need for chemical treatments
- Cedar handles Canadian climate extremes well, expanding and contracting through seasonal changes without warping or cracking
- The natural aroma acts as an insect repellent and creates a pleasant interior feel
- Cedar's grain and tone work beautifully against the established landscaping common to mature Toronto neighbourhoods
Despite cedar being superior to pine for longevity, all wood weathers over time. We treated Matthew's cedar with a high-quality Clear Coat to protect it from sun and weather, preserving the natural cedar appearance for years to come.
The Design Process
Matthew's first priority was space. Downtown Toronto backyards are tight, and a 22' x 12' footprint is large by neighbourhood standards. We worked with a landscaper to clear his existing setup and pour a concrete pad that gave us the absolute maximum footprint his lot could support while still meeting Toronto's setback requirements.
The design details reflect Matthew's investment in quality:
- Premium aluminum windows and doors for natural light and airflow
- Clear Cedar siding throughout for the premium look
- Black corrugated steel trim and outriggers stained with Black Beauty for high-contrast architectural lines
- Black porch lights to keep evening access well lit
Because the build was larger than Toronto's permit-free threshold (15 m² / 161 sqft), this project required a building permit. We handled the engineered drawings, the site plan, and the permit application process so Matthew could focus on the design decisions rather than the paperwork.
A Quiet Space for Music in the Heart of the City
The unit was completed with full climate control for year-round use and proper insulation throughout the walls and ceiling. While we did not build this as a fully soundproof recording studio (full soundproofing requires specialized materials and the absence of windows), the combination of insulation, solid construction, and the buffer distance from the main house gives Matthew a real private space to play drums without disturbing his family.
For homeowners considering a backyard music space, this is the practical reality:
- An insulated backyard studio significantly reduces sound transfer compared to playing inside the house
- The physical separation from your home creates an additional acoustic buffer
- The space can be set up for drums, guitar amplifiers, vocal practice, or full band rehearsal
- For studios where serious sound dampening is required, we can specify additional insulation packages and recommend acoustic treatment
If you are considering a backyard music studio, podcast space, or home recording environment, we can help you think through what will actually work for your use case.
The Result
The footprint and ample windows created a space that feels much larger than its 264 square feet. The landscaping in Matthew's backyard means the view from inside looks more like a cottage getaway than a downtown apartment, which makes the studio feel like a genuine escape rather than another room.
The space is genuinely versatile. Beyond Matthew's drum room and family entertainment space, the same structure could just as easily serve as a home office, a fitness studio, an art studio, or a serene retreat. The investment in cedar siding, premium windows, and full insulation means it will hold its value and its function for decades.
