8x9.5 Backyard Studio in Toronto, Ontario

When Your Backyard Is the Only Space You've Got: A Cube Shed Studio in Toronto
Urban properties in Toronto don't give you much margin. The yard is smaller, the neighbours are closer, and the outdoor space has to work harder than anywhere else. For this project on Draper Street in downtown Toronto, the goal was clear: a compact, well-built backyard studio that earned its place without overwhelming the space around it.
The structure is an 8x9.5 Cube Shed with a partial studio upgrade, meaning it was built to a higher thermal and structural standard than a basic storage unit. R5 rigid foam exterior insulation, metal wind bracing, and a raised insulated subfloor with R10 rigid foam in the joists make this a year-round capable structure. In downtown Toronto, that matters.
Cedar and Steel: A Combination That Earns Attention in Any Light
The front wall is clad in 1x6 horizontal premium tight-knot pine tongue-and-groove panelling, stained Muskoka Brown. That tone sits somewhere between warm honey and dry cedar in full sun, and deepens to a richer, more burnished amber when the light goes flat or it rains. It reads as natural without being rustic, and the horizontal run of the boards gives the face of the shed a clean, composed quality.
The left, right, and back walls are finished in 7/8" corrugated steel siding in Jet Black. That combination, cedar warmth against flat black steel, is one of the most resolved palettes in modern shed design. The black anchors the structure. The wood gives it life. Together they read as intentional rather than assembled, which is exactly the right note for a tight urban yard in Toronto.
Black steel trim and flashing wrap the transitions between materials, pulling the palette together at every edge and corner. Nothing is left to chance.
French Doors on a Flat-Roof Structure: Why the Entry Matters as Much as the Build
The entry is a set of 72x80 black outswing French doors with clear glass panels. On a Cube Shed with a flat EPDM roof and a nine-foot front wall, those doors set the tone for everything. The glass keeps the front face from reading as a closed box. You can see the warm cedar interior framed by the black door and trim, and that visibility makes the studio feel larger from the outside than its footprint suggests.
The flat roof here is finished with EPDM membrane, which is the right choice for a zero-pitch application in a climate like Toronto's. It handles pooling water, handles freeze-thaw cycles, and requires far less maintenance over time than most alternatives. The structure sits on a client-supplied foundation, installed over two days by the Backyard Escape Studios team.
Custom Shed Builders Serving Toronto and the Surrounding Area
Toronto homeowners with smaller yards have fewer options when they need additional space. A well-built backyard studio solves that problem without adding a room to the house. This build on Draper Street, in the heart of downtown Toronto near King West and the Entertainment District, is a good example of what's possible on a compact urban lot.
