A Backyard Bar and Storage Shed in One Scarborough Footprint

Most Scarborough backyards have room for one structure, so that structure has to pull double duty. This 10x8 Essential Shed was built to do exactly that: hold everyday storage behind a sliding barn door, and open up as a backyard bar through a roll-up window on the front wall.

It replaces an old plastic shed. A fresh 8x10 concrete pad was poured for the new build, and the shed is fastened straight onto it with a pressure treated sill plate, so there is no wood subfloor in the structure.

Jet Black Board and Batten Steel With a Natural Pine Bar Front

The back wall, the left side, and a 4 ft section of the front wall are clad in Jet Black board and batten steel with a 12 inch profile. Steel needs no painting or staining, so those faces stay low maintenance year after year.

The remaining 6 ft of the front and the full right side wall are natural pine tongue and groove. The pine was supplied unfinished so the homeowner can choose the final stain tone. Black corner trim frames every wall, which gives this modern backyard bar in Scarborough a crisp outline against the fence line.

Roll-Up Bar Window and Ledge: The Backyard Bar Detail

The standout feature is the bar window. A crank-operated roll-up shutter, 36 inches high by 48 inches wide, sits in the pine section of the front wall above a black ledge. Raise the shutter and the shed becomes a serving counter. Lower it and the opening closes behind a solid black face.

Storage access is through a 42 inch sliding barn door with three frosted glass panels on the right side wall. That is as wide as an 8 ft side wall allows, leaving roughly 39 inches of clear opening for moving gear in and out. Overhead, a low-slope SAM membrane roof sits on 2x6 rafters, with the rafter tails left exposed under the overhang.
