20x8 Backyard Office in Toronto, Ontario

A Toronto Backyard Office Built for Two People on Back-to-Back Calls
Not every home office fits inside the house. This Toronto homeowner and his wife both work remotely and spend most of the day on calls, and one shared room at their kitchen table was never going to work as a long-term home office. They needed two real desks, natural light, and enough separation that a call in one corner did not bleed into a call in the other.
The answer was a 20x8 backyard office studio installed in the yard behind their Toronto home, built by Backyard Escape Studios as a dedicated space for two people to work a full day without stepping on each other's meetings. The layout runs the full 20 foot length along the office side, with desks positioned under a run of windows at the back wall.
Distance did more of the work than any single wall could. Positioning the desks at opposite ends of the room, combined with soft surfaces underfoot and a full insulation package, cut down on the sound carrying between calls in a way one divider inside a small room never would have.
Pine Tongue and Groove on Every Wall, Left Natural for This Toronto Home Office
Every wall on this Toronto studio is 1x6 tongue and groove pine, left unfinished on purpose. The homeowner wanted to match the shed to the beige vinyl siding on his house rather than lock into a stock stain colour, so Backyard Escape Studios ran the pine straight from mill to install and left the final coat to him.
Unstained, the wood reads warm and pale gold in direct sun, with the tongue and groove lines running horizontally across all four walls for a consistent grain pattern from every angle. White trim wraps the doors, windows, and corners, and the roofline carries the same white in its flashing, which keeps the studio looking finished even before a drop of stain goes on.
That white trim does double duty. It reads clean against the raw pine now, and it will read just as clean once the walls are painted or stained to match the house, since white never fights with a homeowner's chosen exterior colour the way a pre-selected stain might.
One Roofline, Two Jobs: Office Space and Storage Bay in the Same Toronto Studio
Most backyard offices are one room. This one will be two. A framed interior wall will split the 20 foot studio, carving out a five foot storage bay at one end and leaving fifteen feet of open office space for the two work stations.
That storage bay will solve a problem most Toronto home offices never plan for. Filing boxes, extra monitors, and the seasonal items that pile up in any workspace will have their own enclosed area with its own white entry door, instead of eating into the desk space or ending up back inside the house.
The office side gets its natural light from a 60x80 white sliding glass door and two 48x48 double-hung windows positioned at desk height, so both work stations sit close to glass without facing direct glare through the day. A helical pile foundation lifted the whole structure slightly above grade, which let the electrician run conduit up cleanly through the back wall instead of trenching a slab.
Toronto's Backyard Office Builder, Serving the Whole GTA
Toronto homeowners working from home are exactly who this kind of build is for. A backyard office like this one gives two people real separation from the house, without adding a renovation onto an already finished home.
This particular studio sits in a backyard near Waverley Road, close to the Beaches and the Danforth, and it is typical of the compact urban lots Backyard Escape Studios works with across the city. The same layout works just as well on a similar lot in Leslieville, Riverdale, or the Junction.
Backyard Escape Studios installs backyard offices and studios across the Greater Toronto Area, from North York and Scarborough to Etobicoke, and out into Mississauga and Markham. Anyone in Toronto weighing a dedicated backyard workspace over a spare bedroom conversion can see what a properly built 20x8 office looks like right here.
