A Modern Shed Built for a Newly Landscaped Toronto Backyard

When a Toronto backyard has just been redesigned, the shed becomes part of the plan rather than an afterthought. It needs a clean form that suits the new deck and lawn, and an install that leaves the finished surfaces as the landscapers left them.

This 16x10 modern shed in midtown Toronto was built for that kind of yard. It is a Cube Shed, 16 ft wide and 10 ft deep with 8 ft walls, giving 160 square feet under a flat parapet roofline. The deck, lawn and stepping stones around it were completed by others before install day, and our crew protected the decking and walkway while they worked.

The left, right and back walls are clad in Agway 26 gauge corrugated steel in a jet black textured finish, run horizontally. Across the front, a black Westridge luxury vinyl feature panel sits at each end, with the same black corrugated steel filling the space between them. Matching black steel drip edge, J-channel and corner trim finish every edge.

Every finish is black and maintenance free, so there is nothing to paint, seal or restain. The roof is framed with 2x6 rafters and 7/16 OSB under a TPO membrane, sloped internally for drainage. From anywhere in this Toronto yard, the shed reads as a single clean black form.

Two Frosted Full-Glass Doors on a 16x10 Modern Shed

Each vinyl panel carries a 36 x 80 frosted full-glass outswing door, one at each end of the front wall. The frosted glass brings daylight inside while keeping the contents private.

The two doors match the layout. The shed is set up for a dividing wall, supplied as precut studs, giving a storage side and a second side the owner may finish as an office, each with its own door. Fastening that wall and finishing the interior are left to the owner.

The walls are framed with 2x4 studs at 24 in on centre, OSB sheathing and house wrap. They were built in the BES shop, then installed on site in one day in this Toronto backyard, on a customer-provided concrete slab with a pressure-treated bottom plate mounted to it.
